Wave-shape pattern control of electroactive polymer gel robots

چکیده
This paper proposes wave-shape pattern control method for whole-body deformable robots containing electroactive polymers. Mechanisms consisting of a typical electroactive polymer gel containing poly 2 -acrylamido -2methylpropane sulfonic acid (PAMPS), named ’gel robots’, have been designed, developed, and controlled experimentally. We faced a common problem called, the degrees-of-freedom problem, namely controlling many points on the gel surface with a small number of inputs. In order to solve the problem, we once reduced the number of inputs to one, and discovered that wave-shape pattern evolves for the beam-shaped gel even in a constant uniform electric field. This method makes use of the pattern formation. Wave-shaped gels with varying curvature are obtained by switching the polarity of a spatially uniform electric field. The method is verified through experiments which are carefully designed based on numerical simulations.

متن کاملInverse dynamics of gel robots made of electro-active polymer gel
This paper formulates and solves the inverse dynamics problem of deformable robots made entirely of electro-active polymer gel. One of the primary difficulties with deformable robots is that they have conceptually infinite degrees of freedom. We solve this problem through the selection of an essential point to generate a desired motion. The problem is then reduced to trajectory control of a poi...
متن کاملFrom Muscle to Brain: Modelling and Control of Functional Materials and Living Systems
This paper describes modelling and control of typical open systems: one is electroactive polymer gel and another is spinal nervous system. It is very important to estimate the model based on their mechanisms in order to navigate the subjects into objective states. Firstly, the wave-shape pattern control method was proposed based on the gel model. Wave-shaped gels with varying curvature were obt...

The purpose of this research is to create a biomimetic excitable cell from electroactive polymers, basing its characteristics on the cardiac myocyte. An array of these artificial cells will ultimately be combined to form a synthetic tissue capable of electrical and mechanical wave propagation. This work is novel and its potential applications are very broad, including the creation of peristalti...
متن کاملInverse Kinematics of Gel Robots made of Electro-Active Polymer Gel
This paper proposes an inverse kinematic model for deformable robots made entirely of electro-active polymer gel. The required method is to control higher degrees of freedom than numbers of input. We have been proposed a kinematic and dynamic model of electro-active polymer system and derived a variety of motions of gel robots by applying spatially varying electric fields. However, inverse kine...
